Laura Small started Safe & Sweet, York, PA's first keto-friendly bakery, after losing 100 pounds following a low-carbohydrate lifestyle. Safe & Sweet wants everyone to have their cake and eat it too, so the company offers healthier food options for all dietary choices, including vegan and dairy-free.
As one of Keller-Brown's newest clients, we wanted to talk to Laura to learn more about her company and its delicious tasting treats. Enjoy!
Keller-Brown: Why did you open Safe & Sweet?
Laura: Before I started Safe & Sweet, I was a highly medicated, pre-diabetic patient for 10 years. I had been obese and unhealthy for the majority of my life and truly knew there had to be another way. I was introduced to the keto high protein, low-carbohydrate lifestyle and saw results immediately. I rapidly lost 100 pounds and got off my diabetic medication completely. I knew I had found the answer to weight loss I had been longing for, but quickly realized there was a huge component missing. What were my options for sweets? Starting in my kitchen, I began making keto-friendly versions of all my beloved treats. When I started sharing them with family and friends, they were blown away by how tasty these treats could still be while also being health conscious.
Fast forward a year and a half and a lot of hard work and dedication and we are now in a professional kitchen. Through a lot of trials and successes, Safe & Sweet is growing and is happy to bring healthier treat options to our customers so they can still indulge without overindulging. All of our items are keto-friendly, diabetic-friendly, and gluten-free.
Keller-Brown: What is your favorite treat to make?
Laura: Special occasion cakes are my favorite. We love being the place that people with dietary restrictions can come to for cake without doubts or worry.
Keller-Brown: What is the most popular item on your menu?
Laura: Our chocolate peanut butter buckeyes and raspberry truffles!
Keller-Brown: At Safe & Sweet, you say you are motivated by a "mission of caring." Tell us about that.
Laura: Our primary focus is to provide high-quality, delicious sweets to everyone regardless of dietary needs. Our sweets have zero effect on a person's glycemic index. Our nut flours are grain-free and won't cause inflammation. We are not only geared for keto — our sweet treats are great for people following a paleo diet too. The whole foods we use in every recipe are also a wonderful option for diabetics and people with celiac disease. We are happy to provide nut-free, dairy-free, and vegan options as well.
Keller-Brown: Does Safe & Sweet deliver?
Laura: Yes! We offer contact-free delivery within a 25-mile radius of our location with a minimum order of $45. You can also place an order for pick up.
Keller-Brown: Why is commercial insurance important for small businesses?
Laura: It's important to stay protected and prepared for anything. A lot of unexpected things can happen in business, just as in life.
Keller-Brown: Why did you decide to become a Keller-Brown customer?
Laura: Melissa Yealy was helping me sell a property and we started talking about how she sold insurance as well. It was a no-brainer to become a Keller-Brown customer and the process was super smooth.
Keller-Brown: What other local businesses do you like to support?
Laura: Molly's Courtyard Cafe in downtown York and Leg Up Farmers Market are two of my favorites.
We're excited to have Laura and her small business part of the Keller-Brown family! You can support Safe & Sweet by visiting the shop on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays and by following them on Facebook and Instagram.
