Be Prepared for Tropical Storm Ophelia

Much of our footprint is expected to face extended periods of wind and rain over the weekend. While rain is desperately needed, soggy ground and wind can cause property damage.  We are sending this communication so you are prepared, know what steps to take to protect your property, and know what to do in case you sustain damage.

Do what you can to prevent damage

Knowing we will have a weather event, do what you can to prevent loss.  Water damage is challenging to deal with.  Regardless of coverage, there are steps you should take to protect your property: 

  • Move contents from a lower level to higher ground, or elevate.
  • Lift furniture and electronic devices off the floor.
  • Place appliances on the ground floor, including your stove, on masonry blocks or concrete. 
  • Bring in loose items, such as garbage cans and lawn furniture so they don't blow away.   
  • Install fresh batteries in sump pumps.
  • Shut off electrical service at the main breaker.
  • Fill your emergency generator with fuel.

If you have damage

If you have damage, it's your responsibility to mitigate loss immediately and as quickly as possible. 

  • Document the damage before you begin cleanup. Take timestamped photos and videos.  Insurance adjusters will need proof of the damage, including water marks on walls and damaged items.
  • Do not throw anything away.  Save physical samples of damaged materials to show your insurance adjuster (carpets, curtains, flooring, etc.).
  • Mold can spread quickly.  Having fans and dehumidifiers in the affected area helps with the remediation process. 
  • Contact a restoration company with the right equipment to soak up the water and get the affected area dry. 
  • Keep receipts for expenses incurred to mitigate loss as they become part of a covered claim.
  • Take safety precautions during recovery and cleanup. Wear protective gear like gloves, sturdy shoes and safety glasses.
  • If you must temporarily relocate due to home damage, save your receipts. You'll need detailed documentation to be reimbursed for additional living expenses.

How to report a claim

  • If the claim happens outside of our business hours, contact your insurance company as soon as possible. Don't wait until Monday.  If you have damage, they can give names of restoration companies to use.
  • Visit the Claims page on our website to find your carrier's website or phone number.
  • Our office hours are 8:00am - 4:30 pm Monday through Friday.  Call our office during business hours at 717-235-6891, and report the claim to an agent.
  • For after hours or emergencies, contact Sarah Brown at 717-817-0904, and leave a message or text if she doesn't pick up immediately.
