Winter Storm Warning: Prepare for Heavy Snow, Freezing Temperatures & Power Outages Across York County, Adams County, Lancaster County, Harford County, and Baltimore County
Major Winter Storm Approaching Our Region
A potentially historic winter storm is bearing down on Pennsylvania and Maryland this weekend, with conditions that could bring the most significant snowfall our region has seen in years. Here's what residents across York County, Adams County, Lancaster County, Harford County, and Baltimore County need to know:
Weather Impacts to Expect
Travel Disruptions:
- All roadways and interstates should be assumed snow-covered, with pre-salting and pretreatment likely ineffective at these extreme temperatures
- Visibility may drop significantly during heavy snow bands
- Travel delays and transit disruptions are expected to be severe
Power Outage Risk:
- Heavy, wet snow combined with increasing wind gusts raises the risk of power outages
- Temperatures will remain dangerously cold, making power loss particularly hazardous

Prevention is Your Best Protection
While we're here to help you through any claim, no one wants to experience one. Taking preventative measures now can save you significant stress, expense, and disruption during this severe winter weather. Here's how to protect your property:
Preventing Frozen and Burst Pipes
Frozen pipes are among the most common winter insurance claims, but they're also one of the most preventable. When temperatures drop into single digits, the risk increases dramatically.
Before the Storm Arrives:
- Insulate Exposed Pipes - Wrap pipes in unheated areas (basements, attics, crawl spaces, and garages) with foam pipe insulation or heat tape. Ensure all water-filled pipes are well insulated to reduce the risk of freezing.
- Seal Air Leaks - Caulk cracks and holes in exterior walls near pipes to prevent cold air infiltration
- Disconnect Outdoor Hoses - Remove and drain garden hoses, and shut off exterior faucet valves if possible
- Know Your Water Shut-Off Location - Make sure everyone in your household knows where the main water shut-off valve is located
During Extreme Cold:
- Set Your Thermostat to at Least 60°F - Maintain this minimum temperature at all times, even when you're away from home or sleeping. This is one of the most critical steps in preventing frozen pipes.
- Open Cabinet Doors - Keep kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors open where piping is present to allow warmer air to circulate around plumbing
- Keep Your Attic Door/Hatch Open - If water-filled pipes are present in the attic, keep the attic access open to allow warm air from your home to reach these vulnerable areas
- Let Water Drip from All Faucets - Allow both hot and cold water to drip from all faucets during extreme cold. Moving water doesn't freeze as easily
- Heat Problem Areas - Use space heaters or heat lamps in areas with exposed pipes, but never leave them unattended
If You Suspect a Frozen Pipe:
- Act Quickly - If you turn on a faucet and only a trickle comes out, you likely have a frozen pipe
- Keep the Faucet Open - Running water, even at a trickle, helps melt ice in the pipe
- Apply Heat Gradually - Use a hair dryer, heat lamp, or hot towels on the frozen section. Never use an open flame or blowtorch
- Work from Faucet Toward Frozen Area - This allows melting ice to escape through the open faucet
If a Pipe Bursts:
- Shut Off the Main Water Valve Immediately - This is your first priority to minimize water damage
- Turn Off Electricity - If water is near electrical outlets or your electrical panel, shut off power to affected areas
- Call a Plumber - Contact a licensed professional right away for emergency repairs
- Document the Damage - Take photos and videos before cleanup begins
- Contact Keller-Brown Insurance Services at (717) 235-6891 - Report the claim as soon as possible so we can begin the claims process
Additional Winter Storm Preparation Tips
Protect Your Home:
- Clear Gutters and Downspouts - Remove debris to prevent ice dams that can cause roof damage. Clear drains, gutters, and downspouts before the storm strikes to help prevent snow buildup.
- Trim Tree Branches - Remove dead or weak branches that could fall on your home or vehicles during heavy snow
- Check Your Roof - Ensure your roof is in good condition and can handle heavy snow loads
- Create a Snow and Ice Removal Plan - Clear snow from walkways, driveways, and sidewalks promptly. Pay particular attention to snow on your roof—use a roof rake to remove snow if it exceeds 10 inches of fresh snow, 3 inches of packed wet snow, or 1 inch of ice.
- Dig Out or Clear Snow from Outdoor Gas Meters - Keep gas meters and vents clear of snow and ice accumulation to ensure proper ventilation and prevent dangerous gas buildup
- Service Your Heating System - Have your furnace inspected and serviced before extreme cold arrives
- Stock Emergency Supplies - Have flashlights, batteries, bottled water, non-perishable food, medications, and first aid supplies on hand. If heavy snow leaves you housebound, three or more days of supplies can help keep your family comfortable.
- Charge Devices - Keep phones, laptops, and backup power banks fully charged
- Have Alternative Heat Sources - If you have a fireplace or generator, ensure they're in working order and you have adequate fuel
- Practice Generator Safety - If using a generator during a power outage, place it on a dry surface outside. Use an open canopy-like structure (such as a tarp suspended by poles) to protect it from snow. Never touch the generator with wet hands, and never operate it indoors.
Protect Your Vehicles:
- Park Vehicles Off the Road - Keeping your car in a garage or other sheltered area will help protect it and allow emergency responders and snow plows more room to maneuver
- Safely Remove Snow from Vehicles - Clear all snow and ice from the exterior of your vehicle, including the roof, so it doesn't blow off and obscure your vision while driving. Always remove all snow, ice, and debris from the exhaust pipe to prevent carbon monoxide buildup in the cabin.
- Check Your Battery - Cold weather is hard on car batteries. Have yours tested
- Use Winter Windshield Fluid - Regular fluid can freeze in extreme cold
- Check Tire Pressure and Tread - Cold weather reduces tire pressure; proper tread is essential for traction
- Keep Gas Tanks at Least Half Full - This prevents fuel lines from freezing and ensures you have fuel if you're stranded
- Pack an Emergency Kit - Include blankets, water, snacks, jumper cables, a flashlight, ice scraper, and a small shovel
Stay Safe During the Storm:
- Avoid Unnecessary Travel - Winter driving conditions pose added risks, and heavy snow can shut down entire roads. If you must drive, let someone know your route and expected arrival time.
- Never Use Generators Indoors - Carbon monoxide poisoning is a serious risk. Only use generators outside and away from windows
- Don't Use Stoves or Ovens for Heat - These are fire hazards and can produce dangerous carbon monoxide
- Check on Neighbors - Especially elderly or vulnerable individuals who may need assistance
- Stay Informed - Monitor local weather reports and follow guidance from emergency management officials
- Create an Emergency Preparedness Plan - Activate emergency alerts on your cellphone to get the latest updates. Decide where your family will meet if authorities order evacuation.
