This fall, thousands of visitors from all over Pennsylvania and Maryland will travel to Brown's Orchards & Farm Markets in Loganville. They go there to indulge in apples from the orchards, freshly pressed apple cider and sweet bakery treats. We spoke to Mary I. Brown, President of Brown's Orchards & Farm Markets to learn the storied history of this Pennsylvania staple. Keep reading to learn how a small roadside stand grew into an orchard, a cafe, a winery and even a wedding venue.

How would you describe Brown's Orchards & Farm Markets to anyone unfamiliar with you?

Brown's has been a delicious destination for almost 75 years. We grow our own strawberries, cherries, peaches, apples, nectarines and plums. Our apples are used to press the best apple cider you will ever drink, and our bakery has been named the Best of York. The market also includes gift baskets, a deli, fudge & candy, pantry items, a greenhouse, gifts, a cafe and a wine shop.

What is the history of Brown's Orchards & Farm Markets?

In 1948, Earl Brown lost his job, moved his family out of the city and bought a 35-acre fruit and poultry farm in Loganville, PA. The Brown family operated a roadside stand to sell produce, and that was the start of the business. Later, the farm expanded to include additional tracts of land, and Brown's Orchards was incorporated in 1972.

The market began in 1986 as a 2,500 square foot space. In 2000, the market tripled in size to include a deli, candy island, floral department, and greenhouse. Over the next decade, the market expanded further to include even more local delights. In 2007, the café & coffee bar was added. Shortly after, in 2009 the Brown family partnered with some wine enthusiasts to start Logan's View Winery using fruit grown on Brown's farm land. Brown's began hosting weddings in 2020.

Brown's Orchards & Farm Market has been owned and operated by three generations of the Brown family; Mr & Mrs. Earl Brown, Mr. & Mrs. Stan Brown and Mr. & Mrs. Dave Brown.  Following Dave's death in March of 2018, Mary Brown has been running the company and hopes the next generation will take over one day.

What's in store this fall at Brown's Orchards & Farm Markets?

In the Fall of 2020, Brown's began hosting weddings with breathtaking views of the farmland. There's no better place for a Fall wedding than at an apple orchard!

In the Market, visitors will enjoy all things apple and pumpkin. Visitors can enjoy fresh-picked apples, apple cider, apple dumplings and pumpkin pies!  We invite kids to tour our farm and market to learn everything about growing apples and the importance of honey bees.

What is a must-try for first time visitors?

It only takes one visit to Brown's to make you feel like you're part of the family and to know that your first visit won't be your last. We're most famous for our apple cider and sugar cakes so be sure to take some home with you. Mary I. What is the most rewarding part of your job?

I love that I'm able to continue Brown's tradition of giving back to our community. Through weekly story time, fall farm tours and our Teacher of the Month Award, we are very involved in the local community. We're proud to recognize local educators and teach Pennsylvania children about their community.

We're honored to be such a treasured member of the York County Community, and we owe it all to our friendly customer service, quality produce and delicious bakery and deli offerings. I feel very blessed to be a member of the Brown's Team.

"Unfortunately, my daughter, Claire, never knew Dave, Stan, or Nona Brown. But she does know Mary. My mother-in-law takes Claire to Mary's Thursday morning story times. Claire loves it so much that she doesn't call it Brown's Orchards...she calls it "Mary's store." Mary has been so warm to our family, continuing a sentiment that many have felt from prior generations of Brown's. I'm so glad that this business exists to provide produce, goodies, and activities to families in our community." - Sarah Brown, President and CEO of Keller-Brown Insurance Services
